What are the most common reasons animals come in for chiropractic care?

man-and-woman-smiling-with-dog-sqWhile every patient is unique, there are four reasons that consistently bring dogs and cats to my treatment table. Whether your pet is a playful puppy, an active agility competitor, or a senior companion enjoying their golden years, chiropractic care can help support mobility, comfort, and overall quality of life.

As an IVCA-certified animal chiropractor, I provide gentle chiropractic care for dogs and cats throughout the Bay Area. You can learn more about my animal chiropractic services here:

Dog & Cat Chiropractic Care:

1. Spinal Pain & IVDD (Intervertebral Disc Disease)

One of the most common conditions I see is spinal discomfort, including pets diagnosed with Intervertebral Disc Disease (IVDD).

Sometimes the signs are obvious. Other times they are subtle and easy to overlook.

You may notice your pet:

– Reluctant to jump on furniture
– Hesitant to climb stairs
– Having difficulty getting up after resting
– Moving more slowly than usual
– Becoming sensitive when touched
– Showing changes in posture

When joints in the spine become restricted, the body often compensates in ways that can affect comfort and movement. Chiropractic care focuses on restoring proper joint motion and supporting healthy nervous system function, helping many pets move more comfortably.

2. “My Pet Has a Limp”

This is perhaps the most common statement I hear from pet owners.

Sometimes the limp is dramatic. Other times it appears only after exercise,
a long walk, or a day of playing fetch.

Many pets are masters at compensation. They may shift weight away from an
uncomfortable area long before owners recognize there is a problem.

Common causes may include:

– Previous injuries
– Arthritis
– Muscle imbalances
– Compensation from another area of the body
– Changes in spinal or joint mobility

By evaluating the entire body—not just the leg that’s limping—we can often identify areas contributing to abnormal movement patterns.

3. Helping Senior Pets Stay Active and Mobile

Just because a pet is getting older doesn’t mean they should stop enjoying
life.

Many of my senior patients come in because their owners want to be proactive about maintaining comfort and mobility.

Goals often include:

– Maintaining independence
– Improving comfort
– Supporting healthy aging
– Staying active longer
– Preserving quality of life

I often tell owners that the goal isn’t to make a 12-year-old dog act like a puppy again. The goal is to help them continue enjoying walks, family activities, and daily life with greater comfort.

Some of my favorite success stories involve senior pets who rediscover their love of movement after receiving chiropractic care.

4. The “We’ve Tried Everything Else” Appointment

I affectionately call these the “Hail Mary” visits.

These are the pets whose owners have already explored multiple treatment options and are looking for another piece of the puzzle.

Maybe your dog has recovered from surgery but still doesn’t seem quite right.

Maybe your cat is moving differently and no one can pinpoint why.

Maybe your pet simply isn’t acting like themselves.

While chiropractic care isn’t a cure-all, many owners are surprised by how much improved joint mobility and nervous system function can impact overall comfort, movement, and quality of life.

Sometimes restoring motion to a restricted area is the missing piece that helps a pet feel more like themselves again.

How Do You Know If Your Pet Might Benefit?

Some common signs include:

– Limping
– Difficulty jumping
– Trouble climbing stairs
– Stiffness after resting
– Changes in posture
– Reduced activity levels
– Signs of aging
– Recovery from injury
– General mobility concerns

If you’ve noticed any of these changes, it may be worth exploring whether chiropractic care could help.
